Marc

Oh dear, is it really all true? Did they offend us and they want it to sound new? -- from "What Ever Happened?" by the Strokes

Santa Rosa, California
What in the world? Joe Gibbs is the new (read: old-but-new) coach of the Washington Redskins? How did the entire sports-writing world drop the ball on this one? Was it simply a matter of Dan Snyder calling up Gibbs at home on Monday night and asking, "Hey, Joe, I know I've kind of fucked up this team and everything, but I've got a question for you..."? What the hell? Joe Gibbs leaves the world of NASCAR for the world of the NFL? Huh?

Am I really rocking the question mark that hard?

Did I really hear a postal carrier say aloud to her co-postal carriers today, "I don't care. I just want to go home and die"? Did I look at my co-worker with eyebrows raised as if to say, "Say wha'"? It has been a strange few days. I've been going to all these small towns and offices in and around Santa Rosa, CA, and finishing up, for the most part, work I did at the very beginning of summer, before I really knew whether or not I would be able to get my job back. It's strange to see the people who remember me and to talk to them and have them ask me all these questions about how cold it is in Chicago right now* and about how I was doing in school** and other random questions about things they remember me talking about when, in reality, I don't really remember even the most basic things about these people - read: their names, intimate details about their lives, and so forth - and it makes me feel like a gargantuan, worthless asshole because they've taken the time and effort to honestly get to know me, even to just the nth degree, and I didn't similarly reciprocate.

I am Jack's raging bile-duct.

In other news, I've read this list of Cubs to appear at the Cubs Caravan tour: "The Caravan will feature Cubs Manager Dusty Baker; General Manager Jim Hendry; Director of Player Development Oneri Fleita; Special Assistant to the President Billy Williams; coaches Gary Matthews and Larry Rothschild; and broadcasters Chip Caray and Pat Hughes. Players scheduled to participate are Michael Barrett, Joe Borowski, LaTroy Hawkins, Sergio Mitre, Mark Prior, Mike Remlinger, Todd Wellemeyer and Carlos Zambrano." Zach and I are going to see it when it rolls through Blormal. I can't believe I'll be in the same room as Dusty Baker and Mark Prior and Carlos Zambrano and ONERI FLEITA!?! What? F*****' rad!

Thanks, Zach, for getting me the ticket.

Thanks, Scoot, for turning me on to Streetlight Manifesto. If you must know, I busted out Catch 22's Keasby Nights album today - to my knowledge, it's the only ska album I've ever heard Zach Ooooh!n even half-heartedly endorse. I like Streetlight Manifesto, but I have one problem with the album - the songs are too damn long. They go on forever, methinks. But, beyond that, it's a nice throwback. That Catch-22 album is tight, though, even after all those years of neglect.

Thanks, Matt, for turning me on to Piebald just about two years ago, now. I remember it was about this time of the year in 2002 when you were at their show in Blormal as they asked, "Who wants to party?" From the murmurings I've heard, you were the only one who responded, "Hell yeah!" and offered your apartment (read: our apartment) for the commencement of said party. You truly are the king of kings, Matt Fast. Truly.

Thanks, Rick, for showing me your ass crack all the time. It still haunts my every waking moment. So much hair. So much crack. So little ass.

I am, again, extremely bored, and I cannot seem to get The Tony Kornheiser Show to properly load on my computer, so I do not get to hear what he had to say about Joe Gibbs and the Redskins, which fact disappointments me because Tony lives in DC and is a Redskins fan and will have all these great insights into the move; not to mention the fact that John Riggins, a former Redskins great, was also on the show today and he probably had a lot to say about the hiring, and yet here I am in California with nothing but bupkis on my computer. Except Coldplay. I have them. And Piebald, too. And other stuff.

Good morrow.

* I don't even want to talk about my flight schedule(s) on Monday and how badly it got messed up. Suffice it to say I went through at least one 5 hour delay.
** I'm honest with people and tell them that I don't do this job full-time.
