Marc

It was almost out of a movie scene. ... I was a little bit in shock that something like that occurred. ... I was still not sure I had seen what I had seen. -- our man Jesse speaking on seeing Robert Russ get shot and killed by a Chicago police officer, taken from the Chicago Tribune's "Witness disputes sop's story" by David Mendell

One. Went to a deaf meeting thingy-thing tonight. I was (I think) the one and only person in the room who did not know sign language. I felt discriminated against because the only people I could understand were the people who were being interpretted at the moment. There were all kinds of other conversations going on throughout the room, but no one was translating those. I felt left out. In a weird way, I was the deaf person in the room because I could not "hear" the language.

Two. If you missed out on the Chicago Tribune article quoted above, you missed out on seeing one of our own, personal bloggers in the Chicago media -- picture and everything. Boy, was that weird seeing my best friend and his mom in the paper with a whole article about them -- and a serious one at that. Kind of surreal. Imagine what it must feel like to be him.

Three. I don't know why they don't just give me an office in the library right now. I'll basically be living there for the next eight/nine weeks. Seriously. Fork one over, you stupid university. I've been over there the last few days terrorizing the stacks, looking for materials on (in no particular order) the Equal Rights Amendment, Phyllis Schlafly (ultra-conservative women's activist), milk reform in LA in the 1910s/20s, the US Army female switchboard operators in WWI, and journal writing. I know people hate it when I talk about what I'm learning about, but I like to make lists sometimes. Kind of like this one time, when I lived in the Stilts with Zach and Scoot and Rick, I found a "Top Ten Movies" list that Zach wrote, and I kind of thought it was weird, and then I thought, "Well, if that's what he wants to do, then let him do it." Don't censor me! That's all I'm saying.

Four. And, finally, I got a hold of my cooperating teacher for my student teaching both this and next semester. Oh man, starting next Tuesday at 8:30am, you all get to hear me complain and whine and wax philosophic about my teaching experiences. Ready? I am ... I think.
