The increase in military influence in civilian life is one of the most alarming trends in contemporary life. The appointment of military men to important government positions and the infiltration of military influence in many different channels constitutes a threat of military domination never equalled in our history. We are convinced that military domination not only increases the danger of war, but likewise endangers our freedom in times of peace, since the military system goes counter to the practice of free democracy. -- taken from Harriet Hyman Alonso's Peace As A Women's Issue
One. I have promised myself that I would not watch television today. It will be an easy feat to accomplish as I will be out of my apartment from roughly 9am to 9pm, but still ... I do not want to watch television today. I don't think there's anything wrong with reflecting on what's happened in the past, because that's where true learning comes from. But I do think that what this country needs right now is not to dwell on something like that. Take the AOL "Welcome" screen, for example. One of the three articles on rotation at login reads, "Did Saddam Aid 9/11 Terrorists?" with a line underneath in much smaller print saying, "No proof, but what do you think?" It seems to me as though they're deliberately trying to provoke a negative response with that type of questioning. I find that disgusting and irresponsible. Peace. Love. Understanding. Elvis Costello has to be right, doesn't he?
Two. On to different topics. I was served an eviction notice two days ago. It didn't exactly say their names on it, but it did have a line about a breach of our lease followed directly by, and I quote, "Two cats!" Two? How'd they know we had two? We have ten days to either get rid of the cats or get out of the apartment, yet still pay the rent either way. The cats are already gone. I'll miss both Crapface and Jackson a little, but not too much. I like my new apartment much better. I think that, when I finally grow up, I would like to do some research and possibly writing into the history of college area slumlords such as ISU's finest Mormons -- Young America Realty. They might as well call themselves -- Christian Slumlords, Inc. cause that's what they are. I don't rent from them anymore, and I only have myself (and my roommate) to blame for the cats, but still ... I'm paying good money to live here -- real good money -- and I don't see why I shouldn't be able to do what I please with the place.
Three. My room is an absolute mess. I'm using a barstool as a chair for my computer desk now as my Wal-Mart computer chair was wicked small. My back hurts slightly less with the barstool, so that's the route I'm going. I've only spent about four hours in front of the screen today, so I'm actually feeling okay. I don't even notice it until I get into bed and stretch out and wince as I realize my back was in a horribly slouched position for the last few hours of the day. I'm going to be old and feeble one day, and I'm going to regret sitting on a barstool for an entire academic year, but for now, I'm with the stool. It's cheaper than buying a new chair. Anyone have one they can donate to the cause?
Four. I don't really have much else to say, I guess. I wonder if you -- whomever you may be -- read this and wonder what's going through my head, or what I look like when I'm writing all this crap down. Sometimes I wonder what people think about when they read it. My impression is more on the "not much" end of the spectrum. So, I guess this is me at 1:10am on a Wednesday night saying so long, I'm out of gas. Cause I am.
