Notes and Observations From the Past Week
Rollo Tomasi: Matt's new band rocks. I'm usually overly critical of groups that my friends are in (why? I don't know), but I'll have to say that I was amazed at how tight and intense these guys were last Saturday night down here in Blormal. Very thick. Very drop-D-ish. It's the type of band Matt should've been in three years ago, instead of that pop-punk stuff that we forced him to play at gunpoint. Kudos, Matt. I'm looking forward to the show next Thursday at the Fireside with this band and the Mt St Helens, too. If you live anywhere near Chicago, you should go. You shall not be disappointed.

Steven: While "headlining" isn't exactly the word to describing closing the show on Saturday night in a small basement in a house across the street from the Bloomington Public Library, Steven did end up playing last, and ended up playing much better than I've seen them play in recent memory. Again, it goes back to me being too critical, I'm sure, but these guys sounded absolutely incredible as well. Almost everyone I came with had left by the time they went on after midnight because they wanted to party, and I even planned on leaving after only a few songs, but I was captivated the entire time. They truly are the SImon and Garfunkel of our generation. Soft, harmonizing acoustic music kind of like Ida with only dudes. It was a sight to see.

The Incomparable Les Incompetants: Or Kenzo, depending on what level you know him, has left town. He's off to student teach like a bitch with the rest of the free world ... or, as I like to think of it, everyone except me. I'm going to miss this kid. I've gotten the chance to get to know him pretty well over the past two years or so, having taken a couple classes with him, and having spent pretty much every Tuesday through Saturday as one of the guy's many drinking buddies. Seriously, no bullshit, no matter how offensive or loud-mouthed he is on their BLARG, this guy is one of the most respectable, nicest, stand-up people I've had the chance to meet. Good luck, Kenzo. Don't take no shit from nobody, and be sure to give me tips on how to survive your teaching escapades.

The Sopranos: This is the first full season I've watched this show, and I'll have to say that I was deeply disappointed to find out that only one main character died throughout the season. I guess I was expecting it to be more like Oz, where no one is safe, and everyone's at risk of instantaneously losing their spot on the show. But I guess I was wrong. They concentrated on Tony and Carmella's marriage far too much for my liking, and took the pussy road out of the confrontations between the families. Give me a break. I'll watch the Sopranos again if Pauly gets his own show where he has to drive his mother and her nursing home friends around the city on various adventures. The title -- Pauly and His Ma'. If that doesn't materialize, you'll find me watching Home Movies on Cartoon Network.

Finals Week: Finals week is a joke, if you ask me. So is the week before finals, and the week before that. This year it's come down to me doing one major project a week, basically, and getting myself all worked up about it for nothing. I had a final yesterday at one o'clock in the afternoon. I spent six hours studying for it on Sunday, and I shit you not when I say that it took me NINE minutes to take the fucking test. If I got anything less than a 97% I'll be unpleasantly suprised. Today I had a final at 7:50am. Things were a bit different on this one. I filled up eight full pages in one of those annoying test Blue Books with two essays -- one on the feminist movement and its subsequent backlash, the other on the progression of the Counterculture to the New Right generation that ended up electing Reagan's douchebag ass into office. My hand hurt so badly afterwards. The only thing I have left on my plate is a Chinese take home exam which I will be doing tomorrow, and a revision of a story to submit to the student publication journal. Tonight, it's all about the beer. I'm getting drunk. It's almost been a week now. Being the designated driver has its downsides.

Take care.
