you can learn a lot about life by just listening.
thanksgiving week gave me another chance to enjoy my grandfather's stories. it amazes me how he can remember things from his past with such detail.. it's pretty cool to see his eyes light up like he was there again, and hear him speak with speed of old. i heard more about his work in WWII tailoring uniforms and fixing parachutes overseas. pretty amazing stuff. we got talking about clothes, and he told me all about his first job as a tailor working at a clothing store with butch baskin, who eventually became the co-founder of baskin robbins ice cream of course, and how he remembers getting a luxurious raise from 5 to 6 dollars a week. growing up the way he did is evident as he still has a problem having so many possessions. he says he owns way too many shirts and pairs of pants now, and that in his time having this many clothes would have been considered wasteful. especially since he rarely leaves the house now. i jokingly added, "yeah, why wear clothes at all?"
his reply: "well... it pays to advertise, but not in this stage of the game."
