The apartment is still quiet ...at nearly 12:30. I'm sitting at my desk going through my most recent downloads. I still haven't gone through the last batch, but it doesn't really matter. The new Coldplay album, A Rush of Blood to the Head, is good, though not as unique as Parachutes, it still was able to hold my attention last night before I fell asleep. I like "In My Place", the second track, the most as of right now.
The new Springsteen album, The Rising, is thoroughly alright. I shouldn't have expected anything near Born To Run or Darkness on the Edge of Town status, but quietly, secretly I still had my hopes up. "Into the Fire", another second track, is in the lead as of lately, but only because I've had that "My City of Ruins" live version on my hardrive for so long, and I like it so much better than the studio version. But, what'cha gonna' do?
Right now Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music is playing, and it sounds exactly like I'd expected it to sound. Not so much like music. More like paranoia in the form of feedback. You'd have to hear it to know what I'm talking about.
Matt Skiba's half of his Kevin Seconds/Matt Skiba split is mediocre at best. The first song, "Good Fucking Bye", sounds a whole lot like that "Jaked On Green Beers" song that the Alkaline Trio released on the Atticus clothing comp. I'm not sure whether or not the rules state that that's okay to do or not. I would assume "no" but I may be wrong. I haven't yet listened, nor will I probably ever listen, to the Kevin Seconds songs, though I'm sure they've got to be better than some of the one's Skiba put up. Whatever happened to the man that wrote "Cringe" or "Sorry About That". That song, the latter, was acoustic, and it was fucking great. Damn stardom.
Sparta's new full-length, Wiretap Scars, just finished qeueing and the first song is sounding pretty sweet so far. There's either another dude singing on this first track, or the dude that sings regularly finally changed his voice a bit to sound less like that other At The Drive In singer-dude. Either way it appears that this rocks. More to come ...
Australia's The Vines newest release, Highly Evolved, sounds just like all that other garage rock crap that people keep shitting onto the radio these days. Don't get me wrong, it's better than rap/rock or nu-metal, but still ... I think we all knew that no matter what came up next it was just going to start another wave of bands that sound pretty much the same. The only problem this time around is the fact that it's stuff we know is alright, but there's so many look-alikes now it's hard to tell who's actually good and who sucks. The Vines, if you can't decide for yourself, suck. There. Feel better?
Sparta's second track, "Air", fucking rocks, though the guy's voice has started slipping back into it's old habits. But fuck it, brah! This shit is intense, but not as blazing as the ATDI stuff. It sounds like they're making a conscience decision to go elsewhere, and I like it. Still more to come ...
Poison the Well's Tear From the Red sucks balls.
I should admit, at this time, that I've also done it again. I like Cursive! I love Cursive, or at least Domestica-era-and-after Cursive. Oh man, it's so good. Like that "Burst and Bloom" song off the same titled ep. Rock. Rap. But really awesome. I can't believe it took a Good Life album for me to finally get into Cursive. I'm a tool.
And, Sparta's new full-length rules, hands down. We knew it would. Sweet. Maybe I should go now.
