Marc

On the way back from the show last night, Matt began to rant and rave about the latter half of the above post. I was hoping that he would log on and give some sort of quick synopsis, but I'm not holding my breath. No one seems to post around here anymore, so I guess its all up to me. Here goes:

I brought up a comment, on I-74 from Champaign to Bloomington, about what we would do if, by the time we arrived at our exit, Bloomington-Normal wasn't there anymore. Kind of question based. Kind of one of those off-handed comments that you just say without thinking much about it. Matt perks up and starts coming up with coinciding "what-if" queries, and suddenly begins to rant and rave about how he's probably the only that actually exists. Twenty minutes later, thirty minutes later, he's developed this whole, single person universe to explain (a) his existence, & (b) the lack of anyone else's existence.

This theory is complicated. At first, we had trouble grasping why, if Matt imagined everything into being, did he bring about shitty things like Limp Bizkit and DUI's. He claims he has no control over it. And besides, we don't exist, so what are we complainging about? I bring up a question, "So, Matt. Let's say that I'm you. If Jeff and Lee Anne are in the backseat, and they're not talking or making any noise, then technically, they're not there?"

He replies, "Well, you're not me, because you don't exist."

"But this is one of those hypothetical situations," I say.

"Okay, hypothetically, if you were me, which you're not, because you don't exist, then 'yes', Jeff and Lee Anne wouldn't exist if you couldn't see or hear or feel or smell or taste them." Matt turns to stare out the window. We all fall silent. "See, right now, the only thing in the world that exists is that field out there and the sky. Its just a 2D image projected from my imagination. When I turn around ..." He turns towards us. "Then you come back into existence."

"So, if you're imagining all of this, why imagine us as the way we are?" I ask.

"Believe me," he says. "If I had any control over it, I would've made you guys," punctuated with a sweeping gesture, "much fucking cooler."

Simple. But how do we know that Matt's theory doesn't really apply to us? What if I'm the only one in the world, and everyone else is a figment of my imagination, not Matt's? What if you are the only person in the world, and none of the rest of us exist?
