Zook INcandenZA

Capitalism stole my virginity.

It's that time of year: top 12 songs of the year, a list
12. Pink-- "Get this party started".
Sue me.

11. Hey mErcedes-- "que (s)chiraz"
Used to be that "owsow" was my favorite, but seeing as though my roomate sings backups on this little dittie plus the fact that it's a great song it's been replaced. sorry wednesday, you'll get over it (get it? get over it. Like it's hump day? Get it? Get it. Oh.

10. (international)Noise Consipiracy-- "Capitalism stole my virginity"
There's this band in Bloomington-cum-chicago called the last vegas who have been trying to resurrect "garage rock" for the last five years. Unsuccessfully, as they see "garage rock" as being synonymous with the Doors (those awful, awful, awful hacks). People who call this garage rock are the same people who call the dismemberment plan "emo". Like Doug, I think the inc's politics are a bit hokey and second year grad student, but this song shakes my ass for me.

9. Superchunk--"art class"
Had any other band put out this record, the press would be shitting themselves ala the strokes. Superchunk back to basics, and I can't think of a better time for it.

8. My Morning Jacket-- "at dawn"
If Johnny Cash were alive (oh wait) and had grown up listening to himself and sonic youth he would be making records like this. A Cormac McCarthy novel encapsulated in song.

7. Dismemberment Plan-- "ellen and ben (live)"
On record this song loses a bit of the edge I remember it having at the Centrum. Any song that talks about John McCaughlin and has a bass line worthy of the Apollo makes the grade for me.

6. spoon-- "anything you want"
Simple simple simple. Keep it simple, ladies and gents, and you get high quality rock songs. "I'll be in the back room drinking my half of the beer..."

5. Joel r.l phelps-- "now you are found"
A song for his sister, who comitted suicide. Heartbreak on plastic.

4. Death cab for cutie--"coney island"
I know I know. all year I was all about "we laugh indoors". And don't get me wrong, I dig that song still. IT's just that "coney island" is so subdued and beautiful and stark. I don't know, it might be the best song they've ever written.

3. ryan adams--"la cienga just smiled (live)"
When I heard this, I was tired and worn but happy. Just spent a day with the RY in chicago, and we'd done a bit too much walking, so I was not exactly energetic. From the beginning, Ryan Adams was trying to steal the show with his energy, but it was when the band left and he played two songs alone that I realized that he is this generation's Van Morrison, as much as he wants to deny it. What Heartbreaker did was set us up for genius, what Gold does is brings us back to earth, but slowly.

2. mt.st.helens--"regionalists"
The first time i heard this song live, i got goosebumps. lots of 'em. If you don't have this song on record, it's cos it hasn't been released yet, cos people who own record labels don't know what the fuck they're doing. Seriously amazing stuff.

1. Strokes--"new york city cops"
As Howard Stern says, this song holds up. Too bad, too bad. All i have is a burned version of it, but it's better than nothing. Best rock song I've heard in like, ten years.
