I've just recently found myself enjoying the softer side of Mary Lou Lord. Good stuff, to be sure. I got a live version of "Camden Town Rain" off Audiogalaxy in Portland a few weeks, and have been looking for stuff ever since. So far, seeing as how this is Central Illinois, I've only been able to find the split EP with Sean Na Na (who I also enjoy). Kind of disappointed after listening through it though, found out she didn't write any of the songs on it. Hmmm. Not sure if that's cool or not.
In varying degrees, I've always been against cover bands. I think that they're basically jokes. But I also have to remember that I played bass for a slightly "cover band" band in high school. About 3/4 of our sets were originals, but we played at a whole lot of bars (and senior citizen's singles dances - primarily for money for recording), and we all know that playing at most bars requires cover songs. Played a whole range of them, too. From Bob Marley to Weezer. Pretty impressive considering the fact that we were only 17 - but then I guess there are real bands out there playing their own songs at 17, on tour and such. Isn't Saves the Day only 20 or 21?
On second thought, don't buy the Mary Lou Lord/Sean Na Na split. I'd give it a "weak". Maybe that's the Newcastle talking, though.
