Thanks for the congrats, guys. We all need to celebrate my good fortune in the near future. Each day of summer school lets me see how much I will not miss the ghetto.

Summer school "promptly begins at 8:30," accoding to the administration here. They let kids in the building as late as 9:30. Today I put a sign on my door stating that I will not allow students after 9. I was met with kids banging on my door as late as 9:30, cursing me and my mother up and down for not allowing them in to disrupt my (productive) class.

They all arrive at 9:45 with a note from the assistant principal, telling me to let them in. He cut off my balls. Of course, I now have no control of these monsters. The ones who were working dilligently are not following lead. I just popped in a movie out of sheer frustration. I can't wait to tell the principal that I am leaving him and his lousy kids.

Marc- I hear ya. They talk about gentrification in our respective neighborhoods, but they haven't seen how wild it gets in the summer, in the heat. My alderman, Joe Moore, is wack. He doesn't realize that the reason people like me aren't buying condos out in Rogers Park is because we don't want to shell out $200K+ to see GD graffiti on our buildings. Your guy, Manny Flores, has the same problem. They are too busy trying to look good for the democratic organization to clean up our streets and allow hard-working, decent people to move in.

I wonder if I will go through ghetto-withdrawl this coming fall. Probably not.

Damn. I lived in Chicago until recently and taught for 8 years in the CPS. I came to Philly with the same intention, but I got another gig--less pay but I haven't been called bitch, ho, yet--to my face. One of my students used to throw desks at me when he wouldn't get his way. Another kept asking me if I were a virgin. These were 6th graders. I got my classroom windows shot out during a gang scuffle and we played duck and cover for a half hour. People don't get it until they have to teach in those hellholes.
