Summer Camp for Failures Commences
My initial foray into sweatagogy (teaching in immense heat) began this past Tuesday. Summer school in the ghetto is just as my title states, Summer camp for failures. There is no swimming, no merit badges, we don't even have a fight song. What I do have is 26 students, 23 desks, and a lot of shitty attitude.
These kids are all here because they need the credit to prevent themselves from entering a "demote" class. They want to graduate on time. Of course, this does not necessarily mean they are willing to take the necessary measures to do this. Every five minutes, I get grief for "givin' too much damn work."
"Life is work. Life is pain. Deal with it and smile. That is all you can do."
My reply is met with snickers. There's an old Jewish proverb that I just made up, it goes like this:
"Trying to turn a shlemeil into a mensch is much like trying to turn a lump of shit into a gold watch."
