Zach Ooooh!n
Between the hammers the heart endures.
From last September 12, this page, this man. I don't consider myself to be a prophet, cos this shit was easy to predict. Now people are writing articles about this in Harper's. I should've tried that. I should also say that I'm smarter than Allen Greenspan, who verbally shat that this could get the economy moving. Tell that to the millions of Americans who have been un- or under- employed for over six months (their numbers are up 50% since 1999):
"Amidst all of this, who knows what to write. Things I do know:
1. Good grief I'm glad my brother decided not to stay in New York. More than likely he would have been working in that area.
2. Good grief I'm glad most (hopefully all) of his friends no longer work in NYC.
3. People who say (as someone I know did) that this attack will be GOOD for the ECONOMY are fucking idiots. First, because their rationale was that WAR is always good for the economy (we're not in one). Second, because "oh haven't you ever taken an economics class" is not a smart thing to say. Third, because, as was proven last night in the Japanese markets, no one likes a country in crisis. Fourth, this kid thinks he knows everything about everything, and I hate people like me. I mean, I hate people like that. Fifth, this is also the kid who tried to tell me what my job was at Best Buy cos he knew someone who used to work there.
4. I genuinely still believe that Watterson Towers is a viable target for terrorist attack. (9/02 update: I
still think this is viable. How could you say it isn't? There's over 3000 kids living there, they are all products of the American Dream, and the building would fall over in a strong wind.) This is directed towards Marcie, and is meant to be a tension release before #5, which I must explain in advance is by no means an attack on those of you (including myself) who are genuine in their hope that everyone ends up allright, and that we won't ever be the same, but might be better.
5. Profit. This will all end up being about profit. Human beings that bleed the same as you and me will profit by doing a whole list of despicable things, mainly they will profit financially. But a select few will profit emotionally, by trying to soak what sympathy the rest of us should be reserving for the directly affected. I am talking here about people who will say "WHAT ABOUT ME?!!?!?!" no matter that they not only didn't know anyone in the building but couldn't care less about what's happening to the millions of people directly effected by this. As
Quinn Says "Everybody wants to be part of a tragedy***1***". Now by that I think he means that some people genuinely feel, and are desperate to help or at least to give comfort. At the same time, I think he's also saying that there are also some people who feel the need to attach themselves to tragedy so that people will notice how difficult it is to be them. Already this morning I heard a woman (Susan from Susan and Fasig in the morning here. Yes his name is Fasig.) say "this is OUR pearl Harbor". She didn't mean it like "Oh, this is terrible, it reminds me of Pearl Harbor", she had this tone to her voice that implied "this is MY pearl Harbor, this is something that I can use as a personal torch to anyone within distance who'll listen to me, cos I know more about this than anyone else, and I hurt more than anyone else about this, and GAWD feel SORRY for me."
P.S.--Pearl harbor was a direct attack on the military of the U.S by another country. This has not been proven, nor will be proven, to be anywhere near the same thing.
I'm reserving my thoughts for the firefighters and the police men and women and the people who were on that plane, who had to see what was going to happen, had to sit helplessly and watch, and know. Who had to call for help, and couldn't be here in the morning to worry on the radio about what was going to happen to their life. Who can't wake up from some kind of terrible daydream. And for the thousands of people who lost best friends or poker buddies or wives or children or fathers.
And someday we'll know what happened, and we'll know the names of those who killed and were killed, and we'll have a story to tell our grandchildren about how things fall apart but you can always put them back together, with the cracks showing for rememberance and thanks. So now I'm going to give thanks, and say "it's great to be alive". And I'm going to live.
***1***From "Covering" by the Mt.St.Helens, from Ontime, Always"
One of my finer moments, I must say. The woman across the hall from my office and I were just talking about the kid from Mjarcie's writing class, and how we just can't understand how people can be so sure they are great writers, when in fact they suck. And I'm talking about the guy who was being critical, here, cos She said he's the worst writer in the class. What I mean is, I'm humble, but that was a fine moment.
Next five: "being a president is like riding a tiger" by maserati; "7 holes" by john doe; "me and my 424" by john vanderslice; "Yeah right, Zach, yer really humble, you pompous ass" by lois lane; and "unsatisfied" by the replacements.
