In a case such as this you become the slave who believes he is free. The most pathetic of bondage. Not tragic. No songs. You believe you would die twice for another truth but in truth would die only for your alone self, its sentiment.
Incidentally: 20. The Last Samurai by Helen Dewitt; 530 pages; 4890/15,000 (finished 4/1/02)
I haven't reread a book since the Hardy Boys seemed infinitely cool, so it's a bit of a surprise that I would pick up this book and then the loved but somehow dreaded Infinite Jest***5*** in successive weeks. The only answer I have is that both of these books speak to me. IJ makes me laugh outloud, which is difficult for fiction to do, and TLS, while also funny, really does more of a "I'm-feeling-down-so-let's-remember-what-it's-like-to-dream" thingy to me. Had
