Vegas, baby ... Vegas -- Day 1:
We're under the assumption that our trip to Vegas is secretly being documented by a group of small, invisible filmakers. They've agreed to let us do the soundtrack, provided by anyone we want. Opening shot -- A pan from passenger to passenger in the O'hare C Terminal, with the credits rolling, executive produced by Jon Favreau and the son of Dean Martin. It's a quick mover with Miles Davis and John Coltrane playing "Someday My Prince Will Come" in the background. They pan down just outside of Gate C8, directly across from the Cinnabon stand to two average looking guys, both with longer than average haircuts, sitting on the edge of the people mover, watching strangers walk by while eating cinnamon rolls and drinking milk. This is our vacation.
Our flight was supposed to leave at 2:50, que "Can't Truss It" by Public Enemy, the flight just got delayed ... got delayed again ... switched gates ... switched aircraft ... everyone gets new seats ... two plus hours later, the aircraft is ready to board. It's a slow motion shot following us as we walk down the catwalk to board the airplane. Que "So Fresh, So Clean" by Outkast. This is the longest flight ever. It's crowded, the seats are old and uncomfortable. My ass started to hurt even before we took off. We both dozed for a little while on the plane, but ended up waking up for the viewing of "Pay It Back" en route. This is the longest movie ever. Finally, after what seems like days, we land in Vegas, and suddenly, its on. After a few more lines to wait in (ie - baggage claim, hotel check in, food court), we are ready to gamble. Que "Under the Hedge" by Ted Leo and the Pharmacists.
First stop is the 25 cent slot machines, the old fashion kind with the "bars" and "7's". I throw in ten bucks, and lose it all in ten minutes. No free drink. Next is the poker machines, also 25 cents. The Pike and myself both throw in twenty dollars. I walk away empty handed. He stays, and is doing well. I take a walk around the place. I've already, by this point, contacted Jen to do some hanging out. We decided weeks ago to play roulette because it seems like an easy game to play. Real games with real dealers scare the shit out of me. I feel uncomfortable because I don't know the rules, and I don't know the people, and this is real money that's being gambled on games I know very little about.
Jen contacts us as we were departing a very long tram ride from the Luxor to Excalibur to Mandalay Bay. We decided to meet her in the walkway between the Luxor and Mandalay Bay, and head in her direction. On the way we're approached by two "gentleman" who make very little smalltalk before offering the Pike Colon Ecstacy -- "try it before you buy it". He passes. I almost pass out from laughter down the walk way. We meet up with Jen and play roulette. We all go in twenty bucks. She and I walk away empty handed. The Pike stays in, again, and cashes out only a little down. I am down fifty dollars down by this point. I've been here for three hours. I'm going to be here for four days. I am done gambling for the night, save ten cents on a nickel slot on our way out to the Strip. Que "Look What Happened" by Less Than Jake.
We walk, and oogle, and walk, and crack jokes, and take pictures, and see this incredible water show outside of the Bellagio Hotel. Jen asks an asian couple if they wouldn't mind taking a picture of all three of us in front of the lake, as soon as the man begins to set up, a huge burst of water shoots forth as Whitney Houston's rendition of "The National Anthem" plays in the background. Perfect. She returns the favor for the couple, even telling them where to stand. We walk back to the Luxor. Jen wants to see our room. The Pike and myself debate on whether or not we should break the "No Girls In the Hotel Room" Rule before our first day is done. We conceded, take Jen up after buying some beer, and take polaroids and rap until the curtain call comes. Que "Lullabye" by Ben Folds Five and fade out.
