scooter

and i'm right here with you.

it snowed today. a light, then heavier snow, which is still trying to settle on the ground. just downstairs, outside the apartment, the wind has drifted the downfall into little patches in the parking lot, like elementary school cliques. groups separated by concrete, but all the same. at least for now. soon they'll grow up into high school crowds; some groups cleaner than others (at least on the surface), some dirtied by the wear of the world.

as i started to come in after the night out, i saw a single brown leaf peering up out of one of these cliques of snow. it was the only leaf in my radius of sight, which made me actually stop before i unlocked the door. it was sticking straight up-- the stem buried slightly in the drift, the rest of it showing off because it was the last one standing. though crumpled and stale looking, i thought it was truly beautiful.

i've recently been to van gogh and gauguin: the studio of the south, which is the current exhibit at the art institute of chicago. i'm no artist, never have been really...

this was the only scene that i've ever actually wanted to paint.
