Hillside scratching on a cheap post card, and I hear chickens running crazy laps in a dusty yard.
3. The Afghan Whigs-Uptown Avondale EP
4. The Afghan Whigs--Congregation
5. The Afghan Whigs--Gentlemen
6. The Afghan Whigs--What Jail is Like EP
7. The Afghan Whigs--Black Love
8. The Afghan Whigs--1965
Oh, The Afghan Whigs. I remember the exact day they became my favorite band. I was watching a recorded version of 120 Minutes, which I used to stay up late on Sunday to tape and then watch the next day after school so I could fast forward through the Cranberries and the crappy Grunge-tip stuff that was starting to flood the market. I must have been 12 or 13. This particular episode was the year end one, back when "alternative" actually meant non-mainstream. And there was "Turn on the Water" from Congregation, and the video was awesome but the song just hooked me, and the next day I went to Crow's Nest in Naperville and bought it, somehow, probably made my mom give me the money. And I was hooked.
And then they put out Gentlemen, and it was all over. The video for "Debonair".....ooh. Just repeated overhead shots of mayhem, and Greg Dulli in suit just looking so goddamn cool...
A great band that is no more, and undoubtedly there'll be some posthumous releases, but I don't think I'll be happy with them (though, here's a guarantee, they will show up in the collection).
