Marc

On the Price of a Look: We (being myself, Matt, Zach, and various others) hit up a bar called Club Foot last night and I was incredibly suprised to see that it was not, indeed, much of a "club" in the dancing, hoochie-pant-wearing sense of the word. I was dismayed, though, to realize that my sweater and cream colored coat did not exactly fit the (apparent) dressing requirements -- leather jacket, tight stonewashed pants, boots of some kind, and tattoos writing up the side of the neck, or down the side of the leg, or anywhere else where they might be visible. It was uncomfortable for a moment, but the discomfort faded after a while as a sense of euphoric haze set in on account of the cheap Rolling Rock beer. That, and Quinn Goodwille's worm dance nearly set the roof ablaze, so we were all content.

Feel like I've been in motion for the past month or so, when I realize that this isn't exactly the case. Motion, in my case, equals happiness, and that is something that I have been, for certain -- happy.

Except for yesterday afternoon, I guess you could say at that point that Super Mario Bros. 3 didn't make me happy. Frustrated would be the better word to describe it. You know the star, right? The thing that makes it impossible for you to get hurt -- I call it being "excellent" -- I don't quite understand why, when you have the star in your little accessories area before you go to a level, why it only lasts for a moment or two in the level itself. If the Frog Suit and the Squirrell Feather and the Mushroom and the Power Wings work for the entire duration of a level, why shouldn't the Excellence Star work for the same length of time? Myself and Matt got up to level 8-1/-2 (?) yesterday with help from the whistle, but we could not get past the floating HellShip. It was frustrating, and ended up leaving Matt in occasional screaming fits. Things just weren't the same afterwards. Why would they make something so hard?

It makes me think back to when I was younger and the game was new, and I've realized that I've never seen anyone beat Super Mario Bros 1, 2, or 3. Yet they, by far, are not the most challenging games I've ever played. Hardest game in the world -- Space Shuttle Command for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Impossible.

And, having just typed that out, I realize that it also brings up the subject of the space shuttle exploding this morning, which is a very sad event. Reminds me of sitting in the gymnasium watching the television during the Challenger disaster, and how awkward the rest of that day felt.

I guess I'll end here, on a sad note. Sorry.
