scoots

more from mista shitty.

tid bit time! ever wonder about the dead?? boy have i got some info for you..

in the 1500's, lead cups were used to drink ale or whiskey. the combination of alcohol and lead would sometimes knock a drinker out for a couple of days. someone walking along the road could find these poor schmucks passed out and mistake them for dead. a drunk would then be prepared for burial. part of this preparation was that they would be laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up.

hence the custom of holding a "wake."

also, have you ever been to england? i have. england is so old and small that they started running out of places to bury people. so they would dig up coffins and take the bones out in order to reuse the graves. when reopening these coffins, scratch marks were sometimes found on the inside, and people realized that in spite of holding “wakes” they were still burying some sad sacks alive. so they began to tie a string on the wrist of every corpse. they led this string through a small hole in the coffin and up through the ground. above ground the string was tied to a bell. people were then hired to sit out in the graveyard all night to listen for the bells-- just in case, you know.

hence the beginning of the term "graveyard shift."

if a bell rang, that person was "saved by the bell." (it's alright-- cuz i was saved by the be-e-ell!) if a week passed by and the bell did not ring, the person was considered a "dead ringer."

and i'm spent.
